Viviane Van Giesen is originally from Porto Alegre, Brazil. In 1983 she received a full scholarship from Rotary for a one-year study at the Art School at the University of Georgia. She received her BA in Fine Arts at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande Do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1986. In 1985 she and her sister founded "Couro Design", a small business that manufactured custom designed leather clothing and sold in big centers across Brazil. In 1991 she moved back to Athens and returned to UGA to study Graphic Design. She and her husband Eddie Van Giesen made Athens GA their home. It is where they raised their three children and have lived for over 30 years.
Viviane is passionate about watercolor and pastel. She has entered and been awarded in various juried exhibitions of state and national scope. Her portraits renderings have been selected to be shown at the Georgia Capitol and at the Portrait Society of Atlanta. Viviane is a GWS Signature Member. She believes strongly in giving back to the art community and collaborating to make local art groups stronger and long-lasting. She is a board member of art organizations in U.S. and Brazil, where she is the co-founder of the Plein-Air Group “Arte `a Tarde”. Currently she is the President of the Georgia Watercolor Society. She practices her art as a means of meditation and communication, conveying the interaction of light and shadow with free-spirit and spontaneity.
